Construction equipment needs to be big and powerful in order to work effectively. However, with that power comes the potential for misuse. Operating a construction vehicle in a careless or negligent manner can result in serious injury. That is why Stribling Equipment has created this guide to preventing common construction equipment injuries.
Anyone operating a piece of construction equipment must be fully trained. While reading the manual or watching a video can help instill the basics, we recommend that part of this training be hands-on for better retention and to catch bad habits before they form.
At a minimum, workers should know how to safely mount and dismount the equipment, how to start the equipment properly, what issues to look for during inspection, how all features of the equipment work, and the equipment’s lifting and load capacity. You should also schedule refresher training on a regular basis.
Some construction equipment will require that operators wear safety equipment such as a hard hat, goggles, gloves, steel-toed shoes, and protective outerwear. No matter what, make sure that all employees wear shoes that provide enough traction. You should also take into account the environment. For example, operators should wear breathable clothing on hot days to help ward off heatstroke.
Slips and falls are among the most common workplace injuries. Do what you can to keep the floor cleared and implement measures such as guardrails, canopy structures, and screens around high places. Clearly mark any obstacles and perform regular safety inspections.
Proper lighting is also important. Make sure that your employees can see what they are doing at all times. Provide artificial lighting when working underground or at night.
Regular maintenance is an important component of injury prevention. Your construction equipment’s owner’s manual should have information regarding when maintenance should be scheduled. If your inspections turn up a problem, schedule a service appointment, even if it seems minor. Small issues can quickly grow into larger problems if left unchecked.
